John Frith began his training at Dartington College of Arts from where he went on to the Guildhall School of Music to study the horn as well as composition with Edmund Rubbra, winning composition prizes in the early 1970's. He has since combined professional horn playing, brass teaching and composition which has led to developing creative projects with young children for Worcestershire County Music Service. John has composed extensively for wind, brass, strings and voices and some of his larger orchestral pieces have been broadcast by the BBC.
'Arabesque' was written in 2002 for the composer's twelve year old daughter, Lydia, an accomplished flautist and talented dancer. "It requires an expressive legato, a generous tone and a broad dynamic range. The performer should endeavour to create a sense of graceful elegance, which is the classical 'arabesque'."
